How many hours of sun do you get? Have you had your soil tested to see what will grow on your property?

My flower beds along the front of the house are mostly shaded until the evening sun sets ... and during the summer it can be scorching that time of day. I've never had the soil tested ... but I can tell you it's mostly sand here in my neck of the boonies.

Here's a website with a list of plants that deer don't like very well. When I scanned the list, I saw lots of things that like the shade.

I love to garden. In the past I've had fruit trees, flower beds, and gardens with tomatoes, radishes, pumpkins, sunflowers, and various types of peppers and squashes. I won't be able to have a big garden this year but am gonna do some container gardening... tomatoes, strawberries, and lotsa flowers!

I'm going to set out some blueberries this year. I tried a few years ago but they died, and now I'm ready to start over with healthy plants. I'll set out peas soon, then tomato, crookneck and zuchinni squash, and maybe some Brussel's sprouts. I always have herbs growing among the flowers. I already have chives, rosemary, mint and oregano, and will add basil, sage, thyme, melissa, cilantro, etc. to them.

Flower-wise, I have about all I can fit already, but I always plant calendula because it really shows it's stuff in the fall when most everything else is kaput.

I ordered several plants from carolwrightgifts.com. Yeah, It's one of those catalogs that have all kinds of stuff at cheap prices but for the price, if they end up turning out well it's great. Otherwise I'll have to look into more expensive sources. tongue.gif I ordered a five fruit tree. It is a tree that has five different fruits grafted to another hardy root stock. This one is supposed to have peaches, plums and nectarines. If it does well, I also want to get a similar grafted tree for apples and citris fruits. I don't have enough room for a full orchard (or a need for one) but this is the best way i could find to get the most variety. I also ordered some Cherry Hedge Bushes, large fruit blueberry and strawberry plants. The tree's are dwarf so should only grow to 10-15' max and the hedge bushes are supposed to grow to 5'. Since I have the two goats out back, I figure they will have fun keeping the bushes trimmed down:P I am also planning on using some chain link fencing to seperate an area for veggies and stuff. I hope to do it this year but might not get to it until next year. I'm also thinking of blackberry and raspberries. biggrin.gif Fresh fruit/veggies taste so much better when you grow them yourself. If it works out I may have to learn how to can stuff. biggrin.gif With the goats, this is the first time my backyard has been cleared to the point where I can actually try to do some gardening back there!
