Is Being Fat Considered Cool Now?

July 20th, 2007 — Size Acceptance

I have been reading other blogs and news reports over the past few days and shaking my head at the fact that some people in the mainstream media have declared being big and curvy is now cool. Stuff like this upsets me becuase it seems with the success of people like Queen Latifah and Jennifer Hudson it is now ok to be fat.

The latest addition to the “its cool to be fat” syndrome is the movie Hairspray. John Travolta is putting on the fat suit and dancing with Nikki Blonsky to convince the establishment that fat folks deserve a chance to. The 1988 movie with Divine in the role of that John Travolta is playing and Ricki Lake in the other role, did not make fat cool so what is the difference today?

People are too critical. If a person is even 15 pounds overweight they are considered fat. All this fat acceptance stuff is fine and dandy, but it's not just a matter of acceptance. People, whether they want to admit it are fat according to society's and Hollywood's standards. People not only need to accept that on the whole this nation is overweight to some degree. Just because a person has some extra on them doesn't mean it's something to be ashamed of. Of course make the lifestyle changes and do something about being overweight. Don't get too comfortable. I know I don't weigh what I should, but I know it's not just a simple as numbers on a scale. It's health problems associated with the extra pounds. I would rather lose some bodyfat knowing it was for my health rather than just looks. And even when one does loose alot of weight there is going to be loose skin and maybe some fat deposits that won't go away. America has to come to terms with their bodies. I've lost 50 and gained back 20 so I know that I can't get comfortable and just not do anything about my weight (which I've allowed myself to do over the past 4 months). Yet, at the same time it can't become an obsession like many teens and adults as well who have given themselves over to the extremes of gastric bypass and extreme protein loading or even binge and purging. Yes, we need to accept our bodies for what they are, but then again at the same time some don't dismiss what the doctors tell us and go the other extreme by not taking care of ourselves.
