Education: Obesity report cards fight childhood bulge, but do they also harm self-esteem?

I got a letter yesterday in my son's backpack about his school doing this BMI thing too. Maybe the schools should stop serving foods so high in carbs and starches and maybe more veggies and fruit. Stop serving chocolate, strawberry and vanilla milkshake milk and just give them reg. milk or water. Stop the teachers from giving the kids candy at the end of the day or cookies and poptarts for snacks 2 hours before lunch and maybe instead give them fruit or cheese.

I think the story was positive information on the subject. The mom did not seem upset that this was put on the report card, and it seems to have had a positive effect on the child. As far as the schools serving healthier snacks and lunches, I agree. Kids should not be able to eat candy bars and coke for lunch. If this information is put on the report card quietly and not made an issue for every child to know about, I see no problem. As a parent we know if our children are overweight, but possibly alerting us to the health issues involved may help us make a change in our childrens lives.

I agree about the cafeteria food. They have stopped serving desserts and only serve fruit or jello now, but they sell "snacks" for the kids to buy. Granted the snacks are baked chips and supposedly healthier, they also have cookies and fruit chews (candy in disguise) Why sell snacks at all? I only allow my students to buy one snack if they are going to buy at all. I see some kids buying 3 and 4 snacks and that is all they eat. Lunch goes untouched.
I do not give out candy in my room and have not for years. If I do, it is very rare and for somthing extremely special. I give out stickers, homework passes, and books.
My kids bring their own snacks. I send a note home telling parents to only send healthy/ non fat foods, but that usually goes in one eye and out the other.
I don't think that school should be blamed for kids being fat. I am tired of taking the blame for everything that is wrong with kids today.. when are parents going to start taking a little responsibility? Let's look at fast food restaurants, meals on the go and not at the table with family, eating in front of the television, pre-prepared foods high in sugars and sodiums, junk food disguised as healthy snacks, kids not playing outside anymore, kids sitting in front of the TV and or video games.

Should I have to put a child's BMI on a report card? No.. let the parent get something from the school nurse or PE department.

P.S. I am not picking on ya Char.. your statements are similar to ones I hear all the time. Hugs!

Adults fall into the same catagory.. let's set better examples. Hey, I'm getting off here to go move around a little.. wanna join me?

I didn't take that as you bashing me.... i know every teacher does different things about snacks. And I as a MOM do NOT send cookies or candy or chocolate to school cause MY SON can't have that at home so I won't send it to school either. I know there are some counties around here that have banned all sugary and fatty foods from their schools. There are no cupcakes allowed for birthdays, no candy or cookies for snacks. They do other things instead. I agree that too many kids sit at home and don't get out side to play as much as they should.

If the parents and the schools would work together instead of playing the BLAME GAME, we as a group could change this problem. And no I'm not perfect.....although i don't get my son candy and chocolate all the time, yes we do go to McDonald's ALOT.

twocents.gif Our schools have "banned" the sugary snacks. I can see where changing the diet is good. My thing is, how about getting the kids outside and active. My kids come home and tell me where they didnt get to go outside today because we had to watch a film...or we watched such and such movie today durning PE. What is with that?? So it is cold out, so it is rainy out, There is a gym that is supposed to be used in those instances. Get them out from in front of the danged TV. Diet AND exercise is what is needed. So many kids cant get out after school. The parents work and they go to day care or extended day programs in school. Both of which (in my opinion) are no better. They use the TV as a babysitter too. Its no wonder kids have a hard time in school. They cant get out the energy. Just my twocents.gif

My daughter was complaining about being fat to her teachers. She told me that her teachers are helping her - not allowing her to have anything high in fat. Why does this bother me? I don't know - it just hit me the wrong way. She is not fat by any means!

My kid is in a great school, but they do one thing that I just don't get...when the kids are unruly they cancel their outside play time, no matter what the weather. Now, you'd think it would stand to reason that a wiggly, talkative kid NEEDS to get out of the classroom for a few minutes! Thay don't just punish the troublemakers, either. When two or three are giving a rough time, the whole class misses their (infrequent) recess time. It's just WRONG. No one will listen to me about this either, even though I back the teacher up with stuff for the class, and no other parent is helping out. This is especially hard on the boys. I think that classroom discipline is well-designed for girls, but most boys have a much harder time with it. Just my opinion...I know that we have some teachers on here- what opinions do you have on this?
